  • Getting over a Fear of Speaking in Public

    Tell me, do you get nervous speaking in public? If so, you certainly wouldn’t be alone. They say that public speaking is right up there with fear of heights and fear of spiders (ugh! spiders!)

    As a health & wellness professional, you need to be perceived as an expert – and nothing says expert more than standing in front of an audience delivering a content and value rich workshop or talk.

    In fact, even if you intend to run your business entirely online, delivering free talks and workshops is still one of THE best ways to get in front of your ideal client and begin to build your community – you just deliver the talk online!

    But what if the thought of speaking absolutely terrifies you?!

    Let me tell you a story about my husband, Chris. He’s a Chiropractor and since forever he has been freaked out by speaking in public. For years he refused to give talks, even though he could see how much it helped me grow my practice.

    Last month Chris’ gym asked him if he’d speak at their open day. For some reason, he agreed.. and then came home to me in a panic to help him prepare!

    I coached him through some of my top strategies for overcoming nerves so he felt more confident speaking in public.

    After practicing his talk several times, off he went to present to a room of 30 people. And you know what happened?

    9 of them are now his patients!! THAT is the power of a well executed workshop!

     

    Getting over a Fear of Speaking in Public

    While I actually LOVE speaking in public (yes, I know I’m not normal!) I still get nervous. And I also understand that most people get REALLY nervous and perhaps to the point where they avoid public speaking altogether.

    Remember – if you let your fear win, you’ll never reap the rewards that a great workshop or talk can bring to your health business.

     

    So here are my Top 5 Tips:

    1. Be Prepared

    Even though I love speaking to groups of people, I wouldn’t do it if I wasn’t prepared.

    I always practice delivering my talk at least once – and sometimes up to 3 times if it’s a new topic. Practicing will make you feel more familiar with the material and you will develop a good flow.

    Watch TedTalks that you love and notice what exactly makes you love them. Notice how the speaker pauses at certain moments, their hand gestures and other body language. Become a student and study the speakers you admire.

    2. Use Slides as a Prompter

    Using slides like those made in Powerpoint can also be a huge help. All of the workshops I run have Powerpoint slides – because they help me feel organised and I don’t have to worry about what to say next.

    Audiences tend to like some sort of visual as well and giving them somewhere else to look takes the pressure off of everyone looking at you. You could use flash cards or notes – whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

    3. Anticipate Questions

    Sometimes there’s an underlying fear of “not knowing enough” that can surface when you’re preparing a workshop or free talk. The worry that a curly question could be asked leaving you stumped sure can make you nervous.

    To help with this, try to anticipate the questions your audience may ask. Think of the common questions you get in your practice – what are clients always asking? You could also brainstorm with a friend to see what they want to know about your topic. Then, prepare an outline for how you might answer each question.

    And remember, if you DO get a tricky question on the day, you can always reply with,

    “Great question! On the spot, I am not sure how to best answer that. Can you leave me your email address so that I can get back to you?”

    4. It’s not about YOU

    Whenever I get nervous about delivering a workshop, or even about writing a blog post like this one, I try to remind myself that this is not about me.

    What I mean is, the reason I am doing this is to hopefully help someone else. What would happen if you didn’t deliver a workshop because of fear – and that meant someone didn’t hear your message and wasn’t helped?

    Tragic!!

    If you change your focus to who you can help, it takes the pressure off. As they say, come from the heart and you can’t fail.

    5. Change your Mindset

    Fear and Excitement are the same emotion – it’s the same hormonal cascade – the difference is just our interpretation. So before you start your workshop (or IGTV video or Facebook Live), tell yourself “I am feeling so excited!” instead of focusing on how scared you are.

    And remember, there are SO many great reasons to get up there and deliver a good workshop, including:

    • Helping your audience overcome a challenge
    • Positioning you as the expert on this topic
    • Naturally helping you to sell your health programs or services

    With so much online at the moment, this all applies to Webinars, Social Media Lives and even Instagram Reels too.

  • 7 Steps to a Successful Personal Branding Photoshoot for Wellness Entrepreneurs

    One thing I encourage all my health & wellness practitioner clients to invest in is a Personal Branding Photoshoot.

    You know, where you hire a photographer to take some pics of you ‘doing your thing’ so that you can use them on socials, your website, and on marketing materials to promote your business.

    Branding is sooo much more than your logo, fonts or colour palette. In fact, when I hear marketers and designers talk about branding as ONLY those things, I cringe!

    Your brand is the promise of the experience your client will have with you. It’s everything.

    In a traditional clinic type practice, branding includes everything from how you answer the phone, the music playing in your waiting room, the essential oil in the diffuser, the pens your clients use to fill in their intake form. It’s also obviously the intake forms too!

    When it comes to an online practice, we need to rely even more heavily on the visual aspects of your brand. And that’s where images of YOU come in.

    HERE ARE MY 7 TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL  PERSONAL BRANDING PHOTOSHOOT

     

     

    1: Create a Pinterest Board Create your own Pinterest board and start collecting photos that you love for inspiration. Start with mine here and pin the pics you love to your own board (my board: https://pin.it/4LILs3k).

    Share your Pinterest board with your photographer ahead of time, so that they can easily see the types of photos and poses that you like

    2: Plan Your Shot List Try to get a mix of images that can be used across your website, social media, in ads, etc. You’ll need a mix of Head Shots, Photos with white space to one side (for ads and social media posts that need text overlaid), pics of you working, pics that show ‘behind the scenes’ such as you preparing healthy food, and some fun ones that show your personality too.

    HOT TIP: With Canva Pro, you can remove the background of a photo so that you can then put yourself onto new backgrounds or different coloured backgrounds, and this works best if the photo is full-length standing – so get your photographer to take some of those!

    3. Use Props Take some props with you like tea/coffee mugs, laptop, bottles of herbs or vitamins, fruit and veg and chopping boards, a green smoothie, books on health and nutrition or others relevant to your niche, pretty notebooks and pens – think anything that resonates with you and your niche.

    4. The Right Outfits Aim for 3-5 changes of outfits so that you can get a mix of photos. Keep colours within your branding guidelines too so that everything ties in. I always try for a dress, a white tee or shirt with jeans, a top and skirt, and a jacket that can be worn over the top of one or two of the other outfits. Jackets and scarves are a great way to quickly change an outfit. I like to put my hair up for the last outfit change too so that it looks different.

    5. Hair and Makeup Having your hair and makeup professionally done will make the world of difference to your final images. A lot of stores like Mecca, Sephora, Mac, or Napolean will do makeup for a fee that’s redeemable on a purchase. Some photographers will suggest makeup artists and even have them available on location. It is 100% worth it as you need a LOT more makeup for photos than in real life. Hair is also great to have done – just popping into your local salon for a blowdry is a small investment to pay to be happy with your photos! Keep the style similar to what you normally wear so that you still feel like you!

    6. Practice Poses Practicing some poses in the mirror before your photoshoot can help you to feel more comfortable once you’re in front of the camera. Trust me, if this is your first shoot you might find you freeze and feel awkward (I used to never know where to put my hands!) If you have 3 or 4 poses that you can fall back on, you’ll get some better shots. Look back at your Pinterest board and practice those poses.

    7. Self Care On the day, eat a good breakfast and drink lots of water. Relax, have fun and you’ll have some great pics!

  • What Every Nutritionist Must Have for A Successful Business

    It still blows my mind how many nutrition & wellness practitioners don’t think that they need the single most important thing in any business to make it a success… a Niche!

    Knowing your niche is the key to having a successful, sustainable business that you actually LOVE!

    Your niche is the combination of WHO you serve, WHAT their one big problem is and HOW your service solves that for them.

    Having a niche in your business does amazing things:
    • It makes it super easy for clients to see that you’re the practitioner for them
    • It opens doors to endless opportunities
    • You become more focused and with that comes more creativity and ideas
    • You can become an expert and feel more fulfilled by your work
    • It makes marketing easier and way more effective (heard the saying, “if you market to everyone, you market to no one?”)

     

    Let’s break it down a bit more (because while it’s the ONE single most important thing in any business, it’s also often really tricky to wrap your head around).

    WHO – the first part is the people you serve, also known as your ‘target market’. Think more along the lines of a ‘community’ rather than what is typically taught in marketing these days, your ‘ICA’ or ‘Ideal Client Avatar’ (I think the whole ICA thing is too granular and it is also quite discriminatory… so I teach my clients to think of communities of clients all grouped together through the big problem that they have/the result they want).

    WHAT – This is their one big problem that they want solved asap (and that they are willing to pay you good money to help them solve it!) Often practitioners don’t pick a problem with enough gumption to it, and they try to market to something like “people who want to feel healthy” You’re WHAT needs to be high priority for your person to solve, so think things that are impacting their life on a daily basis.

    HOW – This part of the Niche formula is your method or process for helping your ideal client/target market solve their big problem. The most successful entrepreneurs develop a ‘signature system’ that they become known for. You might have the basic steps of a signature system already – if you’ve been working with a certain type of client for a while just think of the typical steps you take them through.

    If you don’t yet have a clear idea of your niche, then make figuring it out a priority for the next 30 days. Even just a ‘starter niche’ – you don’t have to stick with it and you CAN change your mind. Try then focusing your marketing towards that niche for 90 days and see what happens.
    (And no, choosing a niche doesn’t mean that you have to turn people away… at least not at the beginning. Trust me though, once you’re attracting an abundance of your ideal client then you will happily refer on anyone outside your niche 😉 )
